First, a few metrics:
Time at UBS: 41 years
Total management experience: 30 years
Currently managing: 4 employees
David's leadership style:
How do you get ready for the day?
At the end of each day I prioritize activity goals for the following day.
How do you approach problem-solving?
Evaluate all possible solution sets.
Prepare to present solution and rationale.
Anticipate push back/questions and be prepared to respond.
What's an example of a challenge you're facing right now?
Scaling up appropriately for growth.
How do you motivate your team to perform well?
Share team goals and benefits with team members. Make sure to be inclusive so team members understand both near- and long-term goals and potential rewards.
Who are your leadership role models?
My Uncle. He, like me, is self-made. Worked through Stanford Law, became managing partner of a mid-size San Francisco law firm, and later became a Superior Court Judge. He is smart, humble and treats all fairly and with dignity – even adversaries.
What advice would you give someone new to leadership?
Take the time to develop a business plan that you share with direct reports. Take time also to understand the individual goals and challenges of your team. Team members will stay more committed if they feel understood and appreciated. Also, praise publicly and deal with issues privately.
What's a particular anecdote that stands out in your career?
A common theme of stories that stand out is helping team members exceed their own expectations. Make sure to give credit where credit is due.
