Ashley's leadership style:
How do you get ready for the day?
At end of everyday, I make a list of anything I have not finished, so I can tackle it first thing. Constant interruption is the norm in my role, so I use my calendar to schedule heads down time for specific tasks.
How do you approach problem-solving?
I try to listen more, and talk less. I like to gather all of the interested parties, and facilitate a solution we all play a part in.
What's an example of a challenge you're facing right now?
The insurance industry is full of challenges. The rising cost of healthcare, the impact of fires and flooding on property insurance premiums and availability, and the fact that all business are trying to do more with less. Everyday, I try to quarterback solutions that make my client's lives easier and their businesses stronger.
How do you motivate your team to perform well?
I believe motivation is multi-faceted and unique to a person. Not all approaches are effective with all team members. While praise, recognition, and bonuses work for many employees, some may respond better to more responsibility, being place in a more challenging role, finding an unexpected thank you note, or being gifted a few hours of PTO. Taking the time to learn what makes your team members tick is essential. Employees that feel known and understood are typically happy and productive.
Who are your leadership role models?
Honestly, my sources of inspiration are my clients. The business owners and leadership teams that truly care about their employees' lives and are working as hard as I am to make their corporate culture a productive, supportive and vibrant place to work. Working side by side, as a trusted advisor and partner, pushes me to bring my best to work for them everyday.
What advice would you give someone new to leadership?
Be the best possible version of yourself everyday. Lead by example. Listen more than you talk, and take the time to discover what makes your teammates tick.
What's a particular anecdote that stands out in your career?
A few years ago, I realized that time is the one thing that I don't have enough of. I began to think differently about how to find new clients. Instead of simply looking for more, I began to look for the right ones. Working for and with the right people, makes every day worth my time.
